About the College

Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), located in Sheikhpura, Patna, was founded in 1983 under an act passed by the Government of Bihar. The institute was conceptualized as an autonomous super-specialty medical college modeled after AIIMS New Delhi, with the goal of providing high-quality healthcare and education in Bihar. Over the decades, IGIMS has earned a reputation as one of the state’s most prestigious centers for medical learning and research.

The MBBS program began in 2011 after receiving approval from the Medical Council of India. Today, IGIMS operates under Bihar University of Health Sciences and follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. The campus features modern academic blocks, digital lecture halls, advanced skill labs, and a well-stocked library. In addition to the MBBS program, the institute offers postgraduate MD/MS courses, super-specialty DM/MCh degrees, and supports robust research initiatives. IGIMS balances strong academic foundations with practical training to produce doctors ready for real-world healthcare demands.

About the Hospital

The IGIMS hospital functions as both a teaching hospital and a tertiary referral center, serving patients not only from Bihar but also from neighboring states. With more than 1,000 beds, the hospital has super-specialty departments that include cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, nephrology, oncology, endocrinology, and more.

It is equipped with advanced ICUs, emergency departments, diagnostic centers, surgical theaters, and organ transplant programs. The hospital records one of the highest patient volumes in eastern India, offering rich clinical exposure to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. IGIMS stands out in Bihar for its super-specialty care and its integration of education, research, and patient services.
