About the College

Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), formerly Government Medical College, Mysuru, stands as a cornerstone in the history of Indian medical education. Established in 1924 by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, it ranks as Karnataka’s first medical college and the seventh oldest in India. Initially opened in 1917 as Mysore Medical School in Bengaluru to train “Sub Assistant Surgeons,” it later upgraded to a full-fledged medical college in 1924 and shifted to Mysuru in 1930.

The college affiliates with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Spread across 160 acres in central Mysuru, the campus blends heritage architecture with modern medical education. The college offers MBBS, MD/MS, and M.Ch programs. Students benefit from digital classrooms, high-tech labs, and a well-stocked library that promotes academic and research excellence.

About the Hospital

MMC&RI functions alongside two prominent hospitals: Krishnarajendra Hospital (K.R. Hospital) and Cheluvamba Hospital. K.R. Hospital, started in 1927, holds nearly 1050 beds and functions as a tertiary care center. It delivers extensive clinical exposure in General Medicine, Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, Urology, and intensive care units like MICU and SICU. A state-of-the-art OPD complex and ICCU facility enhance both learning and patient care.

Cheluvamba Hospital, originally Vanivilas Hospital, was established in 1880 and focuses on maternal and child health. It trains students in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Pediatrics. Both hospitals run 24/7 emergency services, imaging units, blood banks, and central labs, ensuring that students gain real-world, round-the-clock clinical experience.

Principal’s Message

Dr. K. R. Dakshayini leads MMC&RI as the current Dean. Although no formal message is publicly available, the institution carries a legacy of nearly a century. The leadership remains committed to blending tradition with innovation. Through a focus on skill development and ethical values, the college prepares students for evolving medical challenges while preserving the principles on which the institution was founded.

Seats in College

MMC&RI admits 200 MBBS students every year. Admissions take place through the NEET-UG examination. Karnataka domicile candidates receive 85% of the total seats, while the remaining 15% fall under the All India Quota. The postgraduate programs include MD/MS and super-specialty training like M.Ch, expanding learning options for advanced learners.

Fee Structure

The Karnataka government regulates the MBBS tuition fees at MMC&RI to ensure affordability. The approximate fee for the first year stands at ₹72,050. The full five-year MBBS course costs around ₹3.6 Lakhs. Additional charges for hostel accommodation, books, or materials may apply, but the overall cost remains accessible to students from different backgrounds.
