Lakhimpur Medical College
About the College
Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital (LMCH) began operations in 2021 to expand medical education and healthcare in northern Assam. The Government of Assam established it under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The college affiliates with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and holds National Medical Commission recognition.
Situated in Chowkham, Saboti, the campus covers about 50 acres. It includes modern academic buildings, five large lecture halls, seminar rooms, labs for pre-clinical and para-clinical studies, and a central library. LMCH follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. Students benefit from digital learning resources, early clinical exposure, and structured internal assessments. Hostels for boys and girls, as well as quarters for interns and faculty, support a residential academic environment.
The college began its MBBS course in the 2021–22 session with an intake of 100 students. Renewals of permission followed in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
About the Hospital
The attached hospital operates as a 500-bed multi-specialty center. It serves patients from Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Biswanath, and neighboring districts. The facility offers services in medicine, surgery, OB-GYN, pediatrics, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology, radiology, and pathology.
It includes ICU, NICU, dialysis, blood bank, emergency care, and diagnostic support like CT and MRI. The hospital enables hands-on training for students in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings. It also includes five lecture halls and housing for 430 students, 122 interns, and 66 resident doctors.
In February 2022, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility. Built on 168 bighas of land, the project cost over ₹500 crore and now meets critical healthcare needs in the region.
