Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga
About the College
Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), located in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, began its journey in 2015 as an autonomous government medical college. The Government of Karnataka established it to strengthen regional medical education. The institute maintains affiliation with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and holds full recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Covering around 32 to 53 acres, the campus features advanced infrastructure designed for holistic learning. It includes air-conditioned lecture halls with smart teaching tools, department-specific laboratories, spacious demonstration rooms, and a fully digitized central library. Students also benefit from sports and recreational spaces, creating a balanced academic atmosphere. As of now, GIMS primarily offers the MBBS course, attracting candidates from various parts of the country.
About the Hospital
GIMS partners with the Government District Teaching Hospital in Kalaburagi, which acts as its primary clinical training center. This 750-bed tertiary care facility supports student learning across all major departments such as General Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, and Ophthalmology.
Moreover, the hospital includes key diagnostic and treatment services. It has a regional lab, dialysis center, blood bank, mortuary, and specialized care units like ICU, burns ward, CT, MRI, and ART Centre. Through regular rotations, students gain direct exposure to diverse clinical cases and emergency care, which helps sharpen their diagnostic and patient management skills early in their training.
Principal’s Message
Dr. Umesh S. R. currently serves as the Dean of GIMS. While no formal Principal’s Message appears in public sources, his leadership emphasizes academic excellence, ethical responsibility, and professional discipline. He guides the faculty and students with a focus on service, innovation, and community health improvement.
Seats in College
GIMS offers 150 MBBS seats every academic year. NEET UG scores determine eligibility, and students can apply through two channels. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) handles the All India Quota (15%), while the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts counseling for the State Quota (85%).
Additionally, GIMS supports postgraduate learning with 66 MD/MS seats across clinical and pre-clinical specialties, providing a pathway for medical graduates to pursue higher education within the same campus.
Mission and Vision
GIMS aims to develop capable and ethical medical professionals who serve society with dedication. The institution commits to providing a student-centric, practical, and compassionate learning environment. It focuses on building clinical expertise and research skills while encouraging service in underserved areas.
Its vision includes becoming a center of excellence for medical education, patient care, and community health. By integrating education with innovation and outreach, GIMS aspires to create lasting change in both healthcare delivery and academic development.
Fees Structure
The Government of Karnataka regulates the fee structure for GIMS, making it affordable for most students. Currently, the annual tuition fee for the MBBS course is approximately ₹69,450. Over five years, the total tuition comes to around ₹3.1 to ₹3.25 Lakhs.
The college also offers hostel accommodation for both male and female students. These facilities include separate charges for lodging and mess, typically collected annually. This fee model ensures access to quality education without imposing financial strain on deserving candidates.
