Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College & Hospital, Koraput
About the College
Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College & Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput, Odisha, began its journey in 2017 as a government medical institution. It marked the establishment of the state’s first medical college in the KBK region after nearly 54 years. The college affiliates with Odisha University of Health Sciences (formerly Berhampur University) and holds recognition from the National Medical Commission. The hospital’s origins date back to a dispensary in 1908, upgraded to a Local Fund Hospital in 1937, and moved to its current premises in 2004. It later transformed into a teaching hospital with the college’s inception. SLNMCH spreads across 52 acres with modern facilities, including lecture halls, advanced laboratories, a central library, and recreational amenities such as a gymnasium and an indoor badminton court—an uncommon feature among Odisha’s medical colleges.
About the Hospital
SLNMCH’s teaching hospital functions as both an upgraded district headquarters hospital and a newly developed medical college hospital. Before the upgrade, it offered 300 beds. On August 10, 2025, the Odisha Government inaugurated a new 650-bed hospital built at a cost of ₹280 crore. It features advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities, including CT scan, dialysis, mammography, and a dedicated oxygen plant. Plans are underway for a ₹41.15 crore cancer treatment hospital adjacent to the main complex.
Principal’s Message
Prof. Dr. Susanta Kumar Sahu (MD, Microbiology) serves as the Dean & Principal and Medical Superintendent of SLNMCH. While his direct message is not published, official communications show his dedication to academic excellence, ethical patient care, and community health development in the tribal region.
Seats in College
SLNMCH admits 125 MBBS students annually, up from its initial intake of 100. Admissions follow quota-based counseling—85% through the Odisha state quota via OJEE and 15% through the All India Quota via MCC.
Mission and Vision
The college aims to deliver accessible, affordable, and high-quality medical education in historically underserved areas. It focuses on producing competent and compassionate doctors capable of addressing healthcare challenges in tribal and rural regions, promoting regional medical advancement.
Fees Structure
For 2025–26, the annual MBBS tuition fee stands at approximately ₹38,000. Hostel charges are around ₹10,000, making the first-year total about ₹40,000. Subsequent years cost roughly ₹38,256 annually. The college provides an internship stipend and generally does not impose a bond, except in specific cases such as a ₹1 lakh penalty for resignation after admission.
