About the College
Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) began in 1960 and stands as the second medical college in Assam. Located in Guwahati, the college functions under the Directorate of Medical Education, Assam. It affiliates with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences. The National Medical Commission has approved its MBBS, postgraduate, and super-specialty courses.
The campus spreads across 300 acres on Narakachal Hill. Students study in modern lecture halls, advanced labs, and digital classrooms. The college offers dedicated hostels for MBBS, PG, and nursing students. It follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) model. This model ensures early clinical exposure and integrated learning. Students benefit from seminars, simulation labs, small-group discussions, and field visits. About the Hospital
The attached hospital at GMCH operates with more than 2,000 beds. It serves as a key referral center for Northeast India. The hospital provides services in general medicine, pediatrics, surgery, OB-GYN, orthopedics, neurology, psychiatry, oncology, cardiology, nephrology, and dermatology.
Facilities include ICUs, trauma units, radiology labs, modular OTs, and a blood bank. Super-specialty departments such as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, urology, and gastroenterology offer advanced clinical exposure. Because of its high OPD and IPD volumes, students receive hands-on training from the early years. Emergency care runs 24/7 and includes critical care, imaging services, and advanced diagnostics. The hospital allows MBBS and PG students to work on real cases daily under expert supervision.

Seats in College
GMCH admits 200 MBBS students each year through NEET UG. Out of these, 15% belong to the All India Quota, and 85% are reserved for the Assam state quota. The college also offers more than 200 PG seats across MD, MS, and diploma branches. Furthermore, DM and MCh courses are available in several disciplines. State quota students sign a service bond, which mandates work in government hospitals after graduation. This helps improve healthcare in underserved areas.
