About the College

Government Medical College, Idukki, located in Cheruthony, plays a major role in medical education in Kerala’s hilly regions. Established in 2014, it was part of a state mission to bring healthcare and medical education to remote areas. The college is affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), Thrissur. It is also recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The 90-acre campus includes lecture halls, labs, hostels, and a modern academic block. Along with this, the renovated district hospital nearby acts as the teaching hospital. Students get both classroom learning and clinical experience in one place.

About the Hospital

The hospital attached to the college offers clinical training to all MBBS students. As of October 2024, it has around 334 beds. Some reports from earlier years mentioned 300 to 500 beds. It supports departments in medicine, surgery, and diagnostics. The hospital also has emergency care and other essential services. While its facilities are still developing, many upgrades are already in place. As a result, students gain real-world exposure while patients receive full-time care.

Principal’s Message

Dr. Tomy Mappalakayil, Principal as of July 2025, leads the college with a focus on excellence. He believes in combining quality education with ethics and compassion. According to him, the college aims to shape skilled doctors who can serve society. While growing academically, the college also aims to serve as a strong pillar of public healthcare in the region.

Seats in College

The MBBS course at Government Medical College, Idukki, admits 100 students every year. Currently, the focus is only on the undergraduate level. The college continues to improve its labs, library, and academic departments. Over time, it may expand its programs. But for now, the MBBS course remains its top priority.

Vision: To offer advanced and affordable healthcare to people in Kerala through a top-tier medical institute.

Mission: “Quality Care at Low Cost.” The college wants to become a model medical college. It plans to achieve this by upgrading all facilities, producing skilled doctors, and matching the level of India’s best institutions.

Fees Structure

The MBBS fee for the first year is about ₹31,720. It includes tuition fees of ₹23,150, van and miscellaneous fees of ₹1,740 each, and a caution deposit of ₹2,320. In addition, the university registration fee is ₹2,520 and the admission fee is ₹250. For the full MBBS course, the total cost is around ₹1.48 lakhs. Out of this, tuition fees alone make up ₹1.16 lakhs. For students seeking affordable medical education, this college is a smart choice.
