About The College
Government Medical College & Hospital, Sundargarh (GMC Sundargarh) began its academic journey in 2021. The first MBBS batch joined in 2022. The campus is located in the scenic village of Sankara, spread over 21 acres in the hilly terrain of Sundargarh district. The region is known for its tribal heritage and natural beauty. The college carries the inspiring motto “May all people be happy.” It is affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences and recognized by the National Medical Commission. The institution focuses on creating an environment where students can excel in academics, research, and community service.
About The Hospital
The teaching hospital is the former District Headquarters Hospital, located 3 km from the main campus. It played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Later, it evolved into a modern academic healthcare facility. Students receive training in various specialties, gaining exposure to a wide range of clinical cases. This setting allows them to develop essential skills in patient care and medical decision-making. The hospital’s services benefit both urban and rural populations, especially in tribal areas.
Principal’s Message
Prof. (Dr.) Daityari Routray leads the institution as Dean & Principal cum Superintendent. In his message, Dr. Routray emphasizes the mission of GMC Sundargarh—to prepare skilled healthcare professionals who can address the unique challenges faced by tribal and rural communities. He also stresses the importance of empathy, ethics, and dedication in medical practice.
Seats In College
The college admits 100 MBBS students each year. The intake follows the standard quota system, with 85% seats reserved for Odisha State Quota and 15% for All India Quota. The MBBS program runs for 4.5 years, followed by a one-year compulsory internship.

Hostel fees add another ₹14,000. Overall, the estimated annual cost is ₹52,256.
