Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences

About the College

Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) began as Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in 1989 before becoming a full-fledged medical college and research institute. Located on a 100-acre urban campus in Porompat, Imphal East, it holds affiliation with Manipur University and recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college runs 21 academic departments and added a Dental College in 2017. Over the years, it has steadily admitted successive batches of MBBS and BDS students, marking consistent academic growth and expansion.

About the Hospital

The JNIMS teaching hospital consists of multiple blocks, including OPD, Medicine, Main Block with Casualty and Special Wards, and a dedicated Dental OPD. Students receive early and structured clinical exposure under expert supervision. The hospital serves diverse patient cases, ensuring that students gain hands-on training alongside theoretical instruction. By catering to the healthcare needs of Imphal East and surrounding areas, the hospital strengthens the dual mission of patient care and medical education.

Principal’s Message

While a direct quote from the principal is unavailable, JNIMS leadership consistently upholds the motto “Towards a Healthy Manipur.” This reflects the institute’s dedication to public health improvement, clinical excellence, and service to the community.

Seats in College

JNIMS admits 150 MBBS students each year, as per recent NMC-approved capacity. It also offers 90 postgraduate seats across various MD/MS specialties, including General Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Community Medicine. This capacity supports the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical professionals to serve the region.

Mission and Vision

The mission of JNIMS is to create competent, ethical, and compassionate doctors who serve urban and rural communities in Manipur. Its vision focuses on advancing healthcare through medical education, research, and community outreach, in alignment with its motto and regional healthcare needs.

Fees Structure

For government quota MBBS seats, annual tuition fees are about ₹6,472 according to some sources, while others report ₹11,500 per year. Another estimation suggests a total MBBS tuition of ₹2.05 lakhs for the complete course. The differences may be due to variations in one-time charges, category-based fees, or recent updates in fee structure. Hostel and mess fees apply separately.

Infrastructure & Hostels

JNIMS provides separate hostel facilities for male and female MBBS students, along with a co-ed hostel for BDS students. Postgraduate students, residents, and interns have dedicated accommodations. The campus features well-equipped lecture halls, advanced laboratories, and a resourceful library, ensuring a productive academic environment.
