About the College

Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) operates in Kalapet near Ganapathichettikulam and started its MBBS program in 2002. The institution functions under the Madras Medical Mission Trust and affiliates with Pondicherry University. It holds recognition from the National Medical Commission and follows all modern medical education standards.

The 32-acre campus features smart lecture halls, digital libraries, clinical skill labs, simulation centers, and departmental museums. PIMS follows the Competency-Based Medical Education curriculum. This includes early clinical exposure, integrated subject modules, and ongoing assessments. Faculty combine theoretical instruction with hands-on training in labs, small group discussions, and bedside rounds. This blended approach builds diagnostic reasoning, communication skills, and patient care competence.

About the Hospital

The PIMS teaching hospital serves as a tertiary care, multi-specialty facility with nearly 1,000 beds. Students rotate through major departments including Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, ENT, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, and Pathology. Additional departments include Blood Bank, ICU, and Critical Care.

Students receive training through daily exposure to OPD services, ward rounds, emergency units, diagnostic centers, and operating theaters. Faculty supervision ensures that students understand procedures, patient management, and clinical ethics. The hospital serves patients from urban, semi-urban, and rural areas, offering a wide spectrum of clinical cases for practical learning.

Seats in College

PIMS offers 150 MBBS seats annually. Admissions occur through NEET-UG counseling. Of these seats, 15% are reserved for NRI candidates. The remaining 85% include 35% under the government quota and 50% for Telugu linguistic minority students, as per the norms of the Union Territory of Puducherry. The selection process follows transparent, merit-based criteria.
