Silchar Medical College

About the College

Silchar Medical College & Hospital began its journey in 1968 as Assam’s second government-run medical college. Located in Ghungoor on the outskirts of Silchar town, it serves the Barak Valley and surrounding northeastern states. The college functions under Assam’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and affiliates with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati. The National Medical Commission recognizes the institution for both MBBS and postgraduate medical education.

Initially, the college admitted 50 MBBS students annually. That number expanded to 100, then 125 seats with the inclusion of EWS reservations. The campus houses lecture halls, laboratories, digital classrooms, skill centers, and a well-equipped central library. Faculty follow the CBME curriculum, ensuring early clinical exposure and community engagement. Separate hostels exist for UG and PG students, with residential blocks for faculty, interns, and nursing staff. The college also runs diploma and paramedical programs under state health initiatives.

About the Hospital

The attached teaching hospital serves as a regional referral center, with more than 800 functioning beds and an extensive range of medical departments. It caters to patients from Assam and neighboring states like Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. Departments such as general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, OBGY, psychiatry, ENT, and dermatology offer complete care.

Emergency services remain active round-the-clock, supported by modern ICUs, NICUs, operation theatres, dialysis units, diagnostic labs, and a 24-hour pharmacy. Undergraduate students begin clinical training from their second year, supported by structured departmental postings. The hospital regularly participates in public health efforts like immunization, TB control, and maternal care. Over the years, it has expanded its infrastructure with specialty care and advanced diagnostics.

Principal’s Message

The principal stresses the importance of ethical practice, dedication, and clinical competence. He urges students to cultivate a strong foundation in medical knowledge while showing empathy and responsibility toward society. The faculty provides continuous academic guidance and evaluates student growth through structured assessments. The administration remains focused on upgrading institutional facilities, fostering research, and addressing the healthcare needs of underserved populations. The college maintains a strong balance between academic quality and public service.

Seats in College

Silchar Medical College offers 125 MBBS seats each academic year. NEET-UG remains the entrance route, with 15% seats allocated under the All India Quota and 85% through Assam’s state quota counseling. The government’s reservation policy applies for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, and PwD categories. The MBBS program runs for 4.5 years, followed by a mandatory one-year internship. In addition to MBBS, the college admits over 100 students annually in its MD and MS programs, covering both clinical and non-clinical disciplines.

Mission and Vision

Silchar Medical College aims to produce skilled, community-driven doctors who can meet the medical needs of rural and border areas. Its mission emphasizes accessible healthcare, academic excellence, and ethical service. The college seeks to grow as a leader in research, postgraduate training, and public health delivery. The vision includes super-specialty expansions, technology-driven education, and strong regional healthcare integration that balances cost-efficiency with quality care.
