B. J. Medical College (BJMC), Ahmedabad, stands as one of India’s oldest and most respected government medical colleges. The institution began as Ahmedabad Medical School in 1871 and received its current name in 1946, in honor of philanthropist Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy. In 1951, BJMC affiliated with Gujarat University for its undergraduate program, followed by its postgraduate courses in 1956. The National Medical Commission recognizes the college for its MBBS and postgraduate programs. BJMC plays a vital role in shaping the medical education landscape of Gujarat. About the Hospital

BJMC operates in partnership with Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, one of the largest public hospitals in Asia. The hospital spans over 110 acres and offers more than 2,500 inpatient beds, though extended networks sometimes quote a capacity of up to 7,000 beds. Civil Hospital houses super-specialty centers such as the U. N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and the Institute of Kidney Disease. It offers a broad range of services including cardiology, nephrology, trauma care, and emergency medicine. Students at BJMC benefit from hands-on clinical exposure, given the hospital’s massive patient inflow and 24/7 operational facilities.

Seats in College

BJMC Ahmedabad offers 250 MBBS seats annually. Admissions are based on the NEET UG examination. Of these, 15% are filled under the All India Quota, while 85% are reserved for Gujarat State Quota, managed by the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate Medical Courses (ACPUGMEC). The selection process maintains transparency and follows all reservation guidelines prescribed by state and central authorities.
