Government Medical College, Anantapuram—widely known as GMC Anantapur—began operations in 2000 under the name Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences. Since 2019, it has consistently offered 150 MBBS seats per year. The institution affiliates with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, and holds recognition from the National Medical Commission for maintaining educational and clinical standards.
Located on a 65-acre campus in Anantapur, the college features smart classrooms, fully equipped laboratories, a departmental museum, a digital central library, and separate hostel facilities for male and female students. It also includes a physiotherapy center and student activity spaces. Faculty adopt the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) model, providing interactive teaching methods such as early clinical simulations, problem-solving seminars, and regular formative assessments. GMC Anantapur attaches to a Government General Hospital that operates with a bed strength of approximately 400–600. The hospital spans various clinical departments, including General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopedics, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care.
Medical students participate in daily rotations through outpatient and inpatient units, diagnostic labs, surgical theaters, and emergency services.
