Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research

Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences

About the College

The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) in Kohima stands as the first medical college in Nagaland. The Government of India approved this landmark project in 2014 under a centrally sponsored scheme to transform referral hospitals into fully functional medical institutions. Construction experienced delays due to land acquisition challenges, but the foundation marked a new beginning. In September 2023, NIMSR welcomed its first MBBS batch after the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted the Letter of Permission for 100 seats. Affiliated with Nagaland University and recognized by the NMC, the college opens new opportunities for aspiring doctors in the region.

About the Hospital

NIMSR currently uses the Naga Hospital Authority in Kohima as its teaching hospital during the development of its permanent campus facilities. The Naga Hospital began in 1905 as a small dispensary and evolved into a 300-bed general hospital. It now plays a crucial role in delivering clinical training to medical students. The institute is building a 500-bed teaching hospital on campus, with the first 150-bed phase nearly ready through state funding. Additionally, the government has proposed a 400-bed expansion in partnership with JICA, promising advanced medical infrastructure for future batches.

Principal’s Message

While the Principal’s official message is yet to be published, the inauguration of NIMSR—attended by leaders from both the state and the nation—reflects its core mission. The institute focuses on high-quality medical education and research that directly address the healthcare needs of Nagaland.

Seats in College

The college admits 100 MBBS students annually. In the 2023–24 academic session, 85 seats were allocated to candidates from Nagaland, and 15 seats were filled through the All-India Quota, ensuring representation from across the country.

Mission and Vision

NIMSR envisions itself as a hub for medical education and a catalyst for healthcare improvement in Nagaland. It trains competent and compassionate medical professionals prepared to serve diverse communities. At the same time, it fosters research that targets pressing health challenges in both the state and the nation, bridging gaps in healthcare accessibility and expertise.

Fees Structure

For the inaugural MBBS batch of 2023–24, the admission and first-year tuition fees stood at approximately ₹1,39,000, excluding mess and other recurring costs. The fee structure will increase by about 10% each academic year, in line with institutional growth and resource development.
