About the college

Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education & Research (SMIMER) began in 2000 under the initiative of Surat Municipal Corporation. Since its founding, SMIMER has grown into a reputed government medical college in Gujarat. It maintains affiliation with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University and holds recognition from the National Medical Commission.

Over the years, SMIMER has developed an advanced campus for both academic and hospital facilities. The college section includes smart lecture halls, simulation labs, and a rich medical library. In addition, the institution fosters a disciplined environment that prioritizes hands-on learning, community service, and research-based education.

About the hospital

SMIMER Hospital, located within the college complex, serves as the primary training center for students. This hospital offers over 750 beds, though several sources report higher capacities of up to 1300 beds. It operates as a tertiary care facility and provides around-the-clock emergency services.

Moreover, students receive clinical exposure through rotations at New Civil Hospital, Surat, which has more than 1600 beds. These collaborations ensure that students handle a wide variety of medical cases across specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and critical care. As a result, SMIMER offers unmatched real-world experience during MBBS training.

Principal’s message

Dr. Deepak S. Howale, Dean of SMIMER, emphasizes the importance of producing ethical, professional, and competent medical graduates. He encourages a learning environment rooted in integrity and compassion. Under his leadership, the institute focuses on nurturing future doctors who can respond to healthcare challenges with both skill and empathy.

Seats in college

SMIMER admits 250 MBBS students annually. This intake gradually expanded to meet rising demand. Admission relies entirely on performance in the NEET UG exam. While 85% of seats fall under the Gujarat State Quota, the remaining 15% are filled through the All India Quota, managed by MCC.

Mission and vision

SMIMER’s mission revolves around delivering excellent medical education and healthcare services. It aims to prepare students to become competent, ethical, and compassionate doctors. Furthermore, the college envisions becoming a center of excellence in education by focusing on community health, clinical excellence, and professionalism.

Fees structure

For the Government Quota (also called Local or Institutional Quota), the tuition fee stands at ₹7,65,000 per year. Students admitted through the Management Quota pay approximately ₹14,82,000 annually. Meanwhile, the NRI Quota fee is about $26,000 per year. Hostel charges are extra and vary yearly. To avoid confusion, students should always refer to the official college portal or the state admission website for updated fee structures.
