Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), located in Ballari, Karnataka, stands as one of the oldest and most respected government medical colleges in the state. Originally established in 1961 as Bellary Medical College, it earned autonomous status in 1996 and took on its current name. The institution is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
VIMS spreads across a vast 173-acre campus, which once housed the historical Allipur Jail. About the Hospital
The teaching hospitals of VIMS provide clinical exposure across a wide range of specialties. The main Medical College Hospital includes 680 beds and functions as the central training and treatment facility. The District Hospital, with 210 beds, focuses on pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology. The Government Wellesley TB & Chest Diseases Hospital adds another 280 beds, offering hands-on experience in pulmonology and infectious diseases.
Collectively, these hospitals house over 1500 beds. Departments include Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, General Medicine, and super-specialties like Neurosurgery, Urology, and Plastic Surgery.
